The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan’s agricultural economy is based on the Poultry industry. It functions as a highly commercialized, integrated industry that is essential for ensuring national food safety, rural employment, and a steady supply of reasonably priced animal protein. It accounts for more than half of the livestock sector’s economic production.

  • Production Volume: Jordan produces between 240,000 and 251,000 tons of poultry meat annually, making it one of the leading producers in the Levant and the Arab world. In addition to hundreds of separate small-to-medium commercial farms, the commercial infrastructure is mainly centered around important industrial integration networks.

 

  • Flock Segmentation: The national standing poultry population varies from 30 million to 35 million birds at a given operational baseline. Over 2,000 farms across the country are home to this community, with a significant geographic concentration in the northern and central governorates, which include Amman, Irbid, Mafraq, and Zarqa. Commercial table egg layers, grandparent/parent broiler breeders, and specialist broiler businesses comprise the commercial sector.

 

  • Infrastructure Profile: A significant percentage of independent producers continue to run open-sided, semi-intensive homes, while large-scale industry leaders deploy cutting-edge, climate-controlled, closed automated housing systems. These open-sided devices are yet susceptible to external biosecurity breaches and ambient desert microclimates.

 

 

Per Capita Consumption

  • Poultry Meat Consumption: Chicken meat is the primary and most cost-effective source of animal protein for the Jordanian population, experiencing steady growth due to fluctuating prices in local red meat markets. The average poultry meat consumption is estimated at 31 kg to 34 kg per capita per year. Consumer preference is split between chilled/frozen processed poultry distributed in urban supermarkets and fresh chicken processed via traditional local retail shops (Natafat).

 

  • Consumption of Poultry Meat: The Jordanian population’s main and most affordable source of animal protein is chicken meat, which is steadily increasing due to price fluctuations in regional red meat markets. It is estimated that each person consumes between 31 and 34 kg of poultry meat annually. Consumer preferences are divided between fresh chicken processed through traditional local retail stores (Natafat) and chilled/frozen processed poultry sold in urban supermarkets.
  1. Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Brief

The first official diagnostic isolation and confirmation of virulent Newcastle Disease virus strains in Jordan occurred in the 1970s. Since its initial baseline characterization, the virus has established a hyper-endemic status across the region, fluctuating periodically between silent subclinical transmission in commercial complexes and explosive, high-mortality outbreaks in poorly protected flocks.

Newcastle disease is caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), a highly contagious member of the family Paramyxoviridae.

The three main pathotypes of Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) strains in birds are lentogenic (low virulence, mild/no symptoms), mesogenic (moderate virulence), and velogenic (very pathogenic, causing severe respiratory/nervous manifestations and significant mortality).

 

  • Etiology: The disease is caused by virulent strains of Avian Orthoavulavirus 1, family Paramyxoviridae (formerly known as Avian Paramyxovirus 1 or APMV-1). It is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus.
  • Transmission: The virus spreads via inhalation or ingestion of contaminated secretions. Migratory birds act to introduce new strains into local poultry populations.
  • Clinical Signs: Infected birds shows severe respiratory distress, greenish diarrhea, and neurological signs, as torticollis and leg paralysis.
  • Pathology: Postmortem examinations typically shows proventricular, cecal tonsils, and intestinal lymphoid patches hemorrhages, in addition to catarrhal tracheitis

 

The amino acid motif at the viral Fusion (F) protein’s cleavage site is the main factor that determines NDV pathogenicity.

 

  1. Most Prevalent Genotypes and Recent Outbreaks

Dynamic evolution, intense co-circulation of several lineages, and frequent exposure to regional viral traffic are characteristics of the molecular epidemiology of Newcastle Disease viruses in Jordan.

Phylogenetic sequencing targeting the hypervariable region of the viral fusion (F) protein gene identifies the following predominant lineages in Jordan:

  • Genotype VII: Mirroring the wider Middle East, North Africa, and Mediterranean poultry corridors, Genotype VII is the dominant velogenic lineage responsible for massive field outbreaks and vaccination breakthroughs in Jordan. These strains carry the characteristic multi-basic amino acid cleavage site motif, enabling efficient systemic replication and causing severe lesions in lymphoid organs.
  • Genotype VI: Frequently isolated from peridomestic and wild Columbiform species (pigeons and doves). Virulent variants of Genotype VI circulate in local pigeon populations, serving as a permanent environmental reservoir that threatens open-air poultry farms.
  • Genotype II: Commonly recovered from commercial flocks, though almost exclusively associated with low-virulence, vaccine-derived or vaccine-like lentogenic profiles (such as LaSota or B1 variants).

Recent Outbreak Dynamics and Environmental Drivers

ND outbreaks in Jordan show clear seasonal peaks, increasing dramatically during the colder winter months and early spring transitions, according to epidemiological mapping. One of the most important migratory bird routes in the world, the Rift Valley Flyway, has a significant impact on this pattern. Natural water bodies and open areas are contaminated by migratory waterfowl and wild birds that overwinter or travel through the Jordan Valley. These birds are extremely effective vectors.

 

According to recent field statistics, the great majority of clinical cases occur in traditional backyard holdings, open-sided commercial broiler houses, and live bird retail outlets, even while intensive closed-house systems maintain powerful defenses. The virus spreads quickly by contact with wild birds, airborne transmission from adjacent processing facilities, and contaminated transport cages. It routinely overflows into major poultry hubs in the Jordan Valley, Irbid, and Amman.

 

  1. Control, Recommendations, and Vaccination

Conventional live vaccinations alone will not be enough to eradicate the virus in Jordan due to the severe antigenic mismatch between historical vaccine master seeds and modern field strains.

 

  • Reducing Antigenic Divergence: Most traditional live vaccinations used in Jordanian programs, such as LaSota, Clone 30, and B1, are Genotype II. Although these vaccinations offer robust defense against systemic mortality, they frequently do not stop contemporary Genotype VII field viruses from replicating and shedding into the environment.
  • Homologous Inactivated Emulsions: Commercial managers need to put in place a strategic dual-layer program that combines oil-adjuvanted, inactivated vaccines containing homologous Genotype VII antigens with live lentogenic Genotype II strains to quickly establish local mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract. This combination greatly reduces field viral shedding while optimizing circulating humoral antibody titers.

 

Biosecurity and Policy Recommendations

  • Wild Bird Exclusion Netting: To prevent migratory birds and pigeons from entering flock housing, farms must place high-density wire mesh screens over all ventilation inlets, side curtains, and feed storage facilities.
  • Live Retail Market Surveillance: Before birds are moved between governorates, the Ministry of Agriculture must enforce stringent sanitary regulations and conduct regular real-time RT-PCR screening at live bird markets (Natafat) to identify and isolate subclinical viral shedding.
  • Closed-Housing Upgrades: By assisting smallholder farmers in switching from open-sided buildings to closed, negative-pressure environmental control systems, institutional credit and technical assistance can lessen climate stress and lower exposure to airborne virus particles.
