  1. Poultry Industry in Oman

A key component of the Sultanate of Oman’s contemporary agricultural strategy, the poultry industry is greatly impacted by national food security goals set forth in the Oman Vision 2040 framework. Oman’s poultry industry is growing in size and value as the country transitions from reliance on imports to local industrial self-sufficiency, driven by structural expansions from corporate industrial leaders.

 

  • Self-Sufficiency Progress: Historically, Oman’s needs for white meat have been largely met by imports from other countries. However, via significant investments and major projects, domestic self-sufficiency has increased from 36% and is specifically planned to reach 70% by 2030.
  • Commercial Production Baseline: Due to aggressive facility expansions in broiler rearing and processing capacity, the total amount of processed chicken meat produced domestically is increasing toward anticipated targets exceeding 110,000 metric tons.
  • Production Split: A dual production model characterizes the industry. Modern, climate-controlled, closed-system housing is used in the highly structured business sector. At the same time, open-sided traditional farms and rural backyard poultry holdings make up a large, dispersed non-commercial industry.
  • Poultry Meat Consumption: Omani citizens and a large international labor workforce drive a massive demand for poultry products. An estimated 101,000 to 102,000 metric tons of poultry meat are consumed nationwide each year, translating into a high per capita consumption rate of 20.4 kg. The domestic retail market is dominated by fresh and chilled chicken, while urban populations largely eat processed or frozen foods.
  • Table Egg Consumption: Over 62% of local consumption demands are met by domestic table egg networks, which meet a sizable portion of national requirements. With an average of 120 to 150 eggs per year, per capita egg consumption closely follows regional GCC averages.
  1. Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Brief

For more than fifty years, strains of the Newcastle Disease virus have been constantly spreading over the Arabian Peninsula. The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Oman started to organize a structural veterinary recording and epidemiological tracking of Newcastle disease in the late 20th century. The disease has become hyper-endemic in the Sultanate, according to diagnostic records and retrospective data.

Newcastle disease is caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), a highly contagious member of the family Paramyxoviridae.

The three main pathotypes of Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) strains in birds are lentogenic (low virulence, mild/no symptoms), mesogenic (moderate virulence), and velogenic (very pathogenic, causing severe respiratory/nervous manifestations and significant mortality).

 

  • Etiology: The disease is caused by virulent strains of Avian Orthoavulavirus 1, family Paramyxoviridae (formerly known as Avian Paramyxovirus 1 or APMV-1). It is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus.
  • Transmission: The virus spreads via inhalation or ingestion of contaminated secretions. Migratory birds act to introduce new strains into local poultry populations.
  • Clinical Signs: Infected birds shows severe respiratory distress, greenish diarrhea, and neurological signs, as torticollis and leg paralysis.
  • Pathology: Postmortem examinations typically shows proventricular, cecal tonsils, and intestinal lymphoid patches hemorrhages, in addition to catarrhal tracheitis. The amino acid motif at the viral Fusion (F) protein’s cleavage site is the main factor that determines NDV pathogenicity.
  1. Most Prevalent Genotypes and Recent Outbreaks

The genetic epidemiology of  Newcastle Disease viruses in Oman suggests a close relationship with wild bird migratory flyways and regional trade corridors.

Phylogenetic sequencing of the hypervariable region of the viral fusion (F) gene has identified the particular lineage that causes most of the nation’s severe clinical symptoms:

  • Genotype VII: A 98% similarity with highly pathogenic Genotype VII previously reported in Pakistan and throughout South Asia is revealed by molecular analysis of field isolates from epidemics. Due to their polybasic amino acid cleavage site motif, these velogenic field strains are extremely effective at systemic replication and can evade conventional vaccine protection.

Epidemiological mapping across the Sultanate has provided clear insights into how the virus behaves under field conditions:

  • Geographic Hotspot: The Al-Batinah Governorate accounts for the majority of cases, harboring approximately 61% of total farm and bird outbreaks due to its dense concentration of poultry operations and commercial trade routes.
  • Seasonal Peaks: Outbreaks follow a strict seasonal pattern, peaking significantly in January (winter) and dropping to a minimum in July (summer), as extreme heat reduces viral stability in the environment.
  • Management System Vulnerability: Traditional backyard poultry systems suffer the highest burden, accounting for 70% of reported outbreaks, whereas modern closed commercial facilities account for only 5%.
  • The Reservoir Challenge: In fully unvaccinated backyard hens, cross-sectional seroprevalence studies conducted throughout Omani governorates show an average bird-level seroprevalence of 33.8% and a flock-level seroprevalence of 57.1%. This high exposure level demonstrates that backyard and rural flocks are active, long-term environmental reservoirs that constantly pose a threat to adjacent business buildings.
  1. Control, Recommendations, and Vaccination

Aggressive vaccination campaigns must be balanced with structural adjustments to conventional farming methods in order to control Newcastle disease in Oman.

Antigenic Mismatch is a significant problem in Omani field situations. Conventional live vaccinations that belong to Genotype II, like LaSota, Clone 30, or Hitchner B1, may not be able to totally stop the shedding of circulating Genotype VII field viruses.

  • Homologous Genotype VII Inactivated Regimens: Bivalent or monovalent oil-adjuvanted inactivated vaccinations containing regional Genotype VII antigens are being used more frequently by commercial farmers. These offer strong protection and lessen environmental virus shedding when used with traditional Genotype II live strains.
  • Wild Bird Exclusion Barriers: Oman is directly adjacent to migratory bird flyways due to its location between the Horn of Africa and South East Asia. Placing high-density wild-bird netting over all air inlets, feed silos, and water storage units is necessary for commercial operations to impose total physical isolation.
  • Housing Modernization: Because open-sided or backyard systems are 47 times more likely to experience ND outbreaks than environmentally controlled facilities, transitioning smallholders toward semi-closed or closed housing is highly recommended.
  • Active Molecular Surveillance: Poultry businesses should regularly use real-time RT-PCR screening because well-vaccinated commercial flocks can carry Genotype VII subclinically with only slight performance declines. This stops covert transfer between governorates and enables early identification.
