  1. Poultry Industry in Uganda
    In the Republic of Uganda, the Poultry industry contributes roughly 4.3% of the country’s yearly agricultural GDP, making it a vital part of the livestock economy. Poultry farming, which is overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), offers essential protein security, household income, and rural jobs, especially for women and young people nationwide.

     Flock Inventory and Production Systems The estimated number of chickens in Uganda is between 47.6 and 50 million.

    Dual Operational Model:

  1. Traditional Backyard/Free-Range Sector: Consists of around 40–42 million birds, or 85%–88% of the country’s flock. Over 40% of rural agricultural households have local indigenous breeds (Nkoko za Kinyankole, Nganda, and Teso lines) as their main source of financial security. These breeds are raised in wide semi-scavenging circumstances.
    2. Commercial Sector: 12% to 15% of the standing flock is produced in contemporary semi-intensive and intensive broiler and layer operations. Wakiso, Luweero, Mukono, Mpigi, and Kampala are among the center urbanized districts where production is concentrated. These areas rely on commercial mash/pellet feeds and imported grandparent stock.

    Per Capita Consumption Patterns

  • Consumption of Poultry Meat: In urban areas and weekly rural markets, chicken meat is a highly valued source of protein. National per capita poultry meat consumption averages 1.8 to 2.5 kg per person per year, with demand steadily climbing due to population growth and urbanization in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
  • Table Egg Consumption: The country produces more than 900 million eggs a year, driven by commercial layer operations in Central Uganda and indigenous egg collection in Eastern and Northern provinces. Between 20 and 30 eggs are consumed annually per individual.
  1. Newcastle Disease Brief

Newcastle disease was first officially recorded in Uganda in 1955. Monoclonal antibodies were used to describe virulent isolates in 1986, demonstrating the extensive establishment of the virus.
Newcastle disease is caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), a highly contagious member of the family Paramyxoviridae. The three main pathotypes of Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) strains in birds are lentogenic (low virulence, mild/no symptoms), mesogenic (moderate virulence), and velogenic (very pathogenic, causing severe respiratory/nervous manifestations and significant mortality).

  • Etiology: The disease is caused by virulent strains of Avian Orthoavulavirus 1, family Paramyxoviridae (formerly known as Avian Paramyxovirus 1 or APMV-1). It is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus.
  • Transmission: The virus spreads via inhalation or ingestion of contaminated secretions. Migratory birds act to introduce new strains into local poultry populations.
  • Clinical Signs: Infected birds shows severe respiratory distress, greenish diarrhea, and neurological signs, as torticollis and leg paralysis.
  • Pathology: Postmortem examinations typically shows proventricular, cecal tonsils, and intestinal lymphoid patches hemorrhages, in addition to catarrhal tracheitis
  1. Most Prevalent Genotypes and Recent Outbreaks
    Molecular epidemiological investigations of Class II Newcastle Disease viruses in Uganda highlight continuous genetic evolution and regional viral transboundary movement across East Africa.

    Prevalent Genotypes in Circulation
          Phylogenetic sequencing of the hypervariable region of the viral fusion (F) gene identifies the following dominant lineages circulating in Uganda:

  • Genotype V (including Subgenotype Vf and new East African lineages): Uganda and its neighboring East African nations, Kenya and Tanzania, are home to the historical and dominant velogenic lineage represented by Genotype V strains. A multi-basic F cleavage site motif found in isolates confers high lethality and efficient systemic viral replication.
  • Genotype VII (Subgenotype VII.1.1/VIId): In both commercial and backyard flocks, Genotype VII strains have been isolated more frequently during diagnostic screenings. In commercial holdings, these velogenic strains are often linked to serious disease outbreaks and vaccination Failures.
  • Genotype VI (PPMV-1 variants): isolated from feral pigeons and nearby wild birds.
  • Genotype II: Avirulent strains produced from vaccines, such as LaSota or B1 seeds, are primarily found during routine diagnostic surveillance.

Outbreak Patterns and Field Transmission Factors

  • Dry Season Epizootics: ND outbreaks demonstrate strong seasonal periodicity in Uganda, with major epizootic waves occurring during dry spells (January–March and July–August). Nutritional stress, water scarcity, and increased flock movement exacerbate transmission.
  • Live Bird Markets (LBMs) as Amplifiers: Central poultry hubs—such as the Owino (St. Balikuddembe) and Kalerwe live bird markets in Kampala, as well as regional assembly points in Soroti, Mbale, and Gulu—act as major reservoirs where mixed bird species are co-housed, facilitating continuous viral shedding.
  • Vaccine Failure in Commercial Units: Semi-intensive commercial farms relying solely on classical Genotype II live vaccines (LaSota) frequently report field breakthroughs when exposed to circulating velogenic Genotype V or VII field strains, experiencing mortality rates between 20% and 60%.
  1. Control, Recommendations, and Vaccination

Controlling Newcastle Disease in Uganda requires bridging the gap between smallholder free-range systems and intensive commercial operations.

  • Genotype-Matched Inactivated vaccinations: To increase neutralizing antibodies and reduce field viral shedding, commercial broiler and layer operations should combine oil-adjuvanted, inactivated Genotype V/VII-matched vaccinations with early live lentogenic priming (LaSota/Clone 30).
  • Biosecurity Enforcement at Live Bird Markets: At urban and regional poultry trading hubs, mandated cleaning, regular disinfection, and planned market-rest days are implemented.
  • Community Animal Health Worker (CAHW) Extension: Increasing the number of CAHWs in Eastern, Northern, and Western Uganda to teach farmers how to properly administer vaccines, identify disease early, and dispose of infected carcasses in a sanitary manner.
  • Solar Cold-Chain Expansion: Installing solar-powered refrigeration units in sub-county health centers and veterinary offices to maintain vaccination viability before agricultural application.
