  1. Poultry Industry in Kuwait

The poultry sector in the State of Kuwait represents an integral asset within the nation’s strategic food security framework. Despite severe geographical and environmental obstacles, such as extremely dry climates and scarce freshwater resources, the local industry has undergone improvements under the direction of the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAFR) and with the help of scientific assessments from the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR).

  • Total Broiler Production: Kuwait’s domestic commercial broiler meat output fluctuates at 40,000 metric tons (MT) annually. High input costs, extreme summer environments, and limited agricultural land restrict rapid infrastructure expansion.
  • Self-Sufficiency and Import Trends: Between 23% and 30% of the country’s total poultry consumption is met by domestic production. Kuwait mainly imports frozen and chilled poultry products from major international suppliers like Brazil in order to meet local demand.
  • Table Egg growth: In contrast to meat production, the table egg sector has demonstrated rapid growth, with domestic output reaching up to 88,000 tons in peak years. This meets a far larger portion of the nation’s objectives for self-sufficiency.
  • Poultry Meat Consumption: Kuwait’s population, which consists of over 4.5 million locals and foreigners, has one of the highest rates of per capita poultry consumption in the world. Over 80% of the population’s total animal protein intake comes from poultry, with each person consuming between 57.5 and 64.4 kilogram of poultry meat year on average. This is a robust industrial government program for a huge government.

  1. Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Brief

In Kuwait, the historical benchmark for the Newcastle Disease virus dates back to the mid-20th century. The Kuwait 256 (Fowl/1968) strain is one of the most well-known regional isolates used worldwide in comparative molecular studies. This historic velogenic isolate confirmed that virulent lineages of the virus were actively circulating within the country’s early commercial or backyard poultry holdings as far back as 1968. Since then, PAAFR’s diagnostic surveillance has recorded both chronic persistence in live bird markets and non-commercial backyard flocks, as well as occasional epidemics in commercial operations.

The three main pathotypes of Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) strains in birds are lentogenic (low virulence, mild/no symptoms), mesogenic (moderate virulence), and velogenic (very pathogenic, causing severe respiratory/nervous manifestations and significant mortality).

 

  • Transmission: The virus spreads via inhalation or ingestion of contaminated secretions. Migratory birds act to introduce new strains into local poultry populations.
  • Clinical Signs: Infected birds shows severe respiratory distress, greenish diarrhea, and neurological signs, as torticollis and leg paralysis.
  • Pathology: Postmortem examinations typically shows proventricular, cecal tonsils, and intestinal lymphoid patches hemorrhages, in addition to catarrhal tracheitis.  The amino acid motif at the viral Fusion (F) protein’s cleavage site is the main factor that determines NDV pathogenicity.

 

  1. Most Prevalent Genotypes and Recent Outbreaks

The genomic epidemiology of Newcastle Disease virus strains in Kuwait suggests a persistent struggle driven by two dominating Class II evolutionary branches.
The most common genotypes
According to phylogenetic analysis of the viral fusion (F) gene, Kuwait’s disease patterns are mostly driven by the following lineages:

  • Genotype VII: Under field settings in Kuwait, Genotype VII is the predominant velogenic strain, with a polybasic amino acid cleavage site motif, and constitutes the principal cause of vaccine breakthroughs and severe economic losses in commercial broiler and layer complexes.
  • Genotype VI: This lineage is significantly adapted to Columbiform species (pigeons and doves) and remains extremely endemic within Kuwait’s backyard pigeon-breeding operations and racing pigeon clubs.
  • Recent field outbreaks are characterized by intermittent, seasonal surges, mainly during the colder winter months and transitional times when sandstorms are common.
    Outbreaks are most typically detected in semi-intensive backyard systems, traditional agricultural holdings in places like Wafra and Abdali, and live bird retail stores. Because vaccinated commercial flocks can sometimes contain Genotype VII subclinically, the virus spreads silently by indirect transmission, putting surrounding vulnerable or under-vaccinated flocks at increased risk for acute clinical epidemics.
  1. Control, Recommendations, and Vaccination

Due of the strong antigenic mismatch between classic vaccine master seeds and modern circulating field strains, combating Newcastle Disease in Kuwait requires a comprehensive approach blending modern vaccinology with rigorous environmental restrictions.
Strategic Immunization Schedules

  • Genotype-Matched Inactivated Vaccines: For the respiratory tract to quickly develop local mucosal immunity, traditional live vaccines from Genotype II (such LaSota, Clone 30, or Hitchner B1) are essential. However, to combat the dominant Genotype VII field virus, modern operations must combine live vaccines with inactivated, oil-adjuvanted Genotype VII-matched vaccines. Both clinical symptoms and field viral shedding into the environment are significantly reduced by this combination strategy.
  • Climate House Management: Kuwait’s intense summer heat waves need a heavy dependence on negative-pressure ventilation and evaporative cooling pads. Birds’ natural defenses against airborne virus particles can be undermined by high dust collection and heat stress, which can dry out and paralyze their tracheal cilia. It is essential to maintain dust reduction procedures and air filtration systems on a regular basis.
  • Exclusion of Wild Birds and Pigeons: Commercial housing must enforce complete physical isolation due to the active maintenance of Genotype VI and VII strains in local racing pigeons and peridomestic wild birds. To stop wild birds from contaminating water lines and feed bins, high-density mesh screens should be installed across all ventilation inlets and feed storage facilities.
